The Tanzania Standard Wildebeest Migration embarks on its northward journey, traversing the Serengeti National Park and progressing towards the Kenyan border, culminating by the end of July, extending through August and into September. It is at this juncture that the migration showcases one of its most awe-inspiring and perilous feats: the river crossings. These crossings occur at the Serengeti’s Mbalangeti and Grumeti rivers, as well as Kenya’s renowned Mara River. Throughout most of the year, these waterways maintain a relatively tranquil and often dry demeanor. However, with the onset of rain, they transform into tumultuous torrents, posing significant challenges to the wildebeest’s onward journey.

Day 1 : Arusha – Ngorongoro

Pick up from Arusha and transfer to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area You will descend over 600 meters into the crater to view wildlife. Supported by a year-round water supply and fodder, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area supports a vast variety of animals, which include herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and giant African elephants. A large number of flamingos, hippos, and other water birds can usually be seen here.

Day 2: Ngorongoro – Central Serengeti ( Seronera area)

After breakfast, depart for central Serengeti, where the entire day is dedicated to game viewing in the Serengeti National Park. The areas that you visit will depend on where the migrating herds are. Predators usually follow closely behind the trekking animals and include lions, leopards (in the acacia trees), and cheetahs.

Day 3: Central Serengeti ( Seronera area) to Lobo Area

After breakfast, enjoy a full-day game drive in the Wagakuria area. Resident wildlife numbers are exceptionally high in the Wagakuria area, with a pride of lions up to 30 strong, however, from August to October, the area turns into a wildlife paradise. This area is a stunning region with kopjes, woodland, riverine vegetation, and open plains, similar to Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve.

After breakfast, we head towards the far northern reaches of the Serengeti National Park, also known as the Wagakuria. We will do a game drive en route from the Lobo area to the Wagakuria area. As we head north, good sightings of giraffes, plains game, herds of buffalo, and elephants can often be seen. A long stretch of the Mara River runs through the northern Serengeti National Park, and the Mara River provides the migration with its most difficult obstacle. Witnessing the frantic herds of wildebeest crossing the Mara River is amazing.
