1. Machame Gate to Machame Camp
  • Elevation: 1,640m/5,380ft to 2,850m/9,350ft
  • Distance: 11 km/6.8 miles | Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Activity: Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate (about 50 minutes). Complete park registration and begin the trek through the lush rainforest.
  • Terrain: Dense rainforest with tall trees, moss-covered ground, and a cool, humid climate.
  • Highlights: Spot wildlife like colobus monkeys and enjoy the serene rainforest atmosphere.

2. Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp
  • Elevation: 2,850m/9,350ft to 3,800m/12,500ft
  • Distance: 5 km/3 miles | Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
  • Activity: Leave the rainforest and trek through heath and moorland to Shira 2 Camp.
  • Terrain: Rocky trails with giant heather plants and open moorland.
  • Highlights: Enjoy panoramic views of the Shira Plateau and Kibo Peak.

3. Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
  • Elevation: 3,800m/12,500ft to 4,630m/15,190ft (Lava Tower), then down to 3,975m/13,044ft (Barranco Camp)
  • Distance: 7 km/4 miles (to Lava Tower), then 3 km/1.8 miles (to Barranco Camp)
  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours (to Lava Tower), then 2–3 hours (to Barranco Camp)
  • Activity: Trek to Lava Tower, a 300-foot volcanic rock formation, then descend through the Senecio Forest to Barranco Camp.
  • Terrain: Alpine desert with rocky trails and dramatic landscapes.
  • Highlights: The Lava Tower and surreal Senecio Forest. This day is crucial for acclimatization.

4. Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
  • Elevation: 3,975m/13,044ft to 3,995m/13,106ft
  • Distance: 5 km/3 miles | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Activity: Conquer the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb, then trek through valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp.
  • Terrain: Rocky trails with steep ascents and descents.
  • Highlights: The Barranco Wall is one of the most exciting parts of the trek, offering incredible views and a sense of accomplishment.

5. Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Distance: 4 km/2.5 miles | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Activity: Trek to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit push.
  • Terrain: Rocky and barren alpine desert.
  • Highlights: Stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Rest and prepare for the final ascent.

6. Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
  • Elevation: 4,672m/15,331ft to 5,895m/19,341ft (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,067m/10,065ft (Mweka Camp)
  • Distance: 5 km/3 miles (ascent), 12 km/7.5 miles (descent)
  • Hiking Time: 7–8 hours (ascent), 4–6 hours (descent)
  • Activity: Begin the summit push at midnight. Trek to Stella Point, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Descend to Mweka Camp.
  • Terrain: Steep, rocky trails with scree and snow near the summit.
  • Highlights: Witness the sunrise from the Roof of Africa and celebrate your achievement at Uhuru Peak. The descent is long but rewarding as you reflect on your accomplishment.

7. Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
  • Elevation: 3,067m/10,065ft to 1,639m/5,380ft
  • Distance: 10 km/6 miles | Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Activity: Descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi.
  • Terrain: Dense rainforest with muddy trails.
  • Highlights: Reflect on your incredible journey as you descend through the lush rainforest. Celebrate your success with a hot shower and well-deserved rest at the hotel.
