Africa's largest lake

Lake Victoria is the second-largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. It dominates the landscape of East Africa and is shared by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. The lake is a vital economic center and a source of life for millions of people living along its shores. It is historically significant as the source of the White Nile. The coastline ranges from busy fishing ports to quiet, pristine beaches. The lake is dotted with numerous archipelagos, most notably the Ssese Islands in Uganda.

Wildlife and Nature

The lake supports a massive diversity of aquatic life. It is famous for its vibrant cichlid fish and the massive Nile Perch. Birdlife around Lake Victoria is exceptional. The wetlands along the shores are the best places to spot the prehistoric-looking Shoebill stork. Monitor lizards and spotted-necked otters are common sights along the rocky outcrops. While hippos and crocodiles are present, they are less concentrated than in the national park rivers.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Located 23 kilometers offshore from Entebbe, Ngamba Island is a sanctuary for orphaned chimpanzees. It allows visitors to view these primates in a near-natural environment during their feeding times. It is a critical conservation project on the lake.
