Experience an unforgettable safari in Tanzania, beginning with Mikumi National Park, known for its rich wildlife, including elephants and lions. Next, explore Ruaha National Park, the country’s largest, renowned for rugged landscapes and a high concentration of elephants. Finally, venture into Udzungwa National Park, celebrated for its biodiversity and stunning rainforests, perfect for hiking and discovering unique wildlife. Together, these parks showcase Tanzania’s breathtaking natural beauty.
Every Mikumi Holiday Safaris trip is tailored to your personal preferences and interests. Below you’ll find a sample itinerary to inspire your own custom-designed journey.
In the morning, meet & greet with your professional guide in Dar es Salaam and depart to Mikumi! We recommend getting an early start to avoid the morning traffic. Once you leave Dar es Salaam and Chalinze behind you, follow the Tan-Zam-Highway westward, passing local farms and villages. Sisal plantations along the road are a common sight. Sisal, which belongs to the agave species, was introduced during the colonial days and is mainly used for making ropes and mats out of its hairy white strings. Continue to your accommodation, located either inside the national park or on its outskirts.
After breakfast, proceed with picnic lunch to Mikumi National Park! Spend the rest of the day exploring the park in search of large mammals including buffaloes, elands, elephants, giraffes, warthogs, wildebeests, and zebras. But also watch out for hyenas, leopards and lions. Mikumi National Park is dominated by an open grassland plain surrounded on three sides by mountains – creating an impressive landscape. Stop at the hippo pool to see hippos, which usually spend the daytime in the water to avoid overheating, sunburn and dehydration. At night, they become more active and leave the water to graze. Return to your accommodation.
After breakfast, follow a scenic road through baobab-filled valleys to the town of Iringa and stop for a picnic lunch. Afterwards, continue driving further west to the unique Ruaha National Park whose landscape is dominated by large baobabs, acacia bush-land, riverine forest, flood-plain grassland and miombo woodland. Ruaha is Tanzania’s largest National Park and one of the premier wildlife parks in Africa! Spend the afternoon on a game drive and be prepared for great elephant encounters as large family groups are often seen together dust bathing or crossing one of the many rivers. Continue to your accommodation in the late afternoon.
Look forward to an astonishing day out in the bush as you explore Ruaha National Park with its breathtaking landscape and its dense concentration of wildlife during a full day game drive. The park captivates with its countless plains game including buffaloes, impalas, warthogs and zebras. It is world renowned as the home of Roan and Sable antelopes as well as the great Kudu. But it also boasts a fine predator population consisting of cheetahs, hyenas, leopards, lions and wild dogs. With more than 450 recorded bird species, including horn-bills, turacos, this is also a must-see destination for bird lovers.
After breakfast enjoy one last game drive in this unspoiled wilderness as you make your way back to the park gate. Continue to Iringa and stop at the local market for a small tour or visit Neema Crafts Workshop before heading towards Udzungwa. This national park is part of the Eastern Arc Mountain Range and was established in 1992 in order to protect the rain forest. Continue to your accommodation and spend the rest of the day relaxing at your property. There are several activities that can be arranged directly from your accommodation, including guided bicycle rides and village town tours.
Spend the day on a hiking adventure inside Udzungwa Mountains National Park and explore this park by foot with a ranger. The landscape is dominated by lush montane forest. As you follow any of the walking trails, look out for endemic birds, butterflies and primates. On rare occasions, it is possible to come across buffaloes and forest elephants but honey badgers, bush-pigs, servaline genets and leopards have also been sighted. As you hike to the waterfalls, be on the look-out for the Angola-black-and-white colobus, recognizable by white hairs on its cheek and shoulder, or the famous Udzungwa Red colobus.
After breakfast enjoy a last forest walk from your accommodation before returning to Dar es Salaam with a picnic-lunch. Drop-off in Dar es Salaam town or transfer to Dar es Salaam Airport for your onward journey.
