1. Pre-Trek Briefing
  • Activity: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. A driver will pick you up and take you to your hotel in Moshi.
  • Briefing: Meet your guide for a pre-trek briefing. They’ll explain the route, safety measures, and check your equipment to make sure you’re ready for the climb.

1. Hotel to Mandara Hut
  • Elevation: 1,860m/6,100ft to 2,700m/8,875ft
  • Distance: 8 km/5 miles | Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
  • Activity: After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate (about 1 hour). Complete park registration and meet your porters. Begin the trek through the lush rainforest to Mandara Hut.
  • Terrain: Dense rainforest with tall trees, moss-covered ground, and a cool, humid climate.
  • Highlights: Spot wildlife like colobus monkeys and blue monkeys. The rainforest is alive with sounds and scents, making it a magical start to your trek. You can also take a short side trip to Maundi Crater for stunning views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya.

2. Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
  • Elevation: 2,700m/8,875ft to 3,700m/12,200ft
  • Distance: 12 km/7.5 miles | Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Activity: Leave the rainforest behind and enter the heath and moorland zones. Trek through rolling hills and open landscapes to Horombo Hut.
  • Terrain: Heathland with giant lobelias and grounsels. The trail is rocky but well-maintained.
  • Highlights: Enjoy breathtaking views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo Peak. You may start to feel the effects of altitude, but the gradual ascent helps with acclimatization.

3. Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
  • Elevation: 3,700m/12,200ft to 4,700m/15,500ft
  • Distance: 9 km/5.5 miles | Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Activity: Trek across the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks to Kibo Hut. The trail becomes steeper and more challenging as you enter the alpine desert zone.
  • Terrain: Alpine desert with a barren, moon-like landscape. The air is thinner, and the temperatures drop.
  • Highlights: Pass the last watering point and prepare for the summit push. The views of the surrounding landscape are dramatic and awe-inspiring.

4. Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
  • Elevation: 4,700m/15,500ft to 5,895m/19,340ft (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,700m/12,200ft (Horombo Hut)
  • Distance: 6 km/4 miles (ascent), 15 km/9 miles (descent)
  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours (ascent), 6–8 hours (descent)
  • Activity: Begin the summit push at midnight. Trek through the darkness to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Horombo Hut.
  • Terrain: Steep, rocky trails with scree and snow near the summit. The descent is long and tiring but rewarding.
  • Highlights: Witness the sunrise from the Roof of Africa and celebrate your achievement at Uhuru Peak. The descent is tough but rewarding as you reflect on your accomplishment.

5. Horombo Hut to Moshi
  • Elevation: 3,700m/12,200ft to 1,700m/5,500ft
  • Distance: 20 km/12.5 miles | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Activity: After breakfast, descend through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi.
  • Terrain: Forest with wet and muddy trails at lower elevations. The descent is gentle but can be slippery.
  • Highlights: Reflect on your incredible journey as you descend through the lush rainforest. Celebrate your success with a hot shower and well-deserved rest at the hotel.
