Wildlife in Kidepo Valley
Kidepo Valley has an impressive diversity of wildlife. It includes many species not found elsewhere in Uganda. The park is home to over 77 mammal species and is known for its large herds of Cape buffalo. Lions, elephants, and leopards are also present. Kidepo is one of the few places in Uganda where you see cheetahs and rarer animals like the bat-eared fox. Large herds of zebras and Rothschild’s giraffes roam the plains. The park is also home to various antelope species, including Jackson’s hartebeest and eland.
A Cultural Landscape
The areas around Kidepo are the traditional lands of the Karamojong pastoralists and the Ik people. The Ik are a small tribe who live high in the Morungole Mountains. A cultural visit offers a fascinating insight into their distinct traditions and their connection to this remote landscape. - Cultural Encounters: Arrange a visit to a local Karamojong village. You can also undertake a hike to meet the Ik community on Mount Morungole.
