Tsavo East National Park
Tsavo East is the larger of the two parks and is characterized by its flat, dry plains and open savanna. The landscape is dominated by the Yatta Plateau, one of the world’s longest lava flows. The Galana River flows through the park, providing a lifeline for its diverse wildlife. The park’s signature red, dusty soil gives the entire region a unique and dramatic color.
Wildlife in Tsavo East
Tsavo East is a stronghold for large elephant herds, which are famously known as the “Red Elephants” from dusting themselves with the park’s vibrant soil. It is home to all members of the “Big Five,” including lions, leopards, Cape buffalo, and a small population of rhinos. The park’s open terrain makes it a good place to spot cheetahs. You will also find giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species. The Aruba Dam and other water sources attract abundant birdlife.

Tsavo West also has a rich diversity of wildlife, including the “Big Five.” It is a particularly important location for the critically endangered black rhino, which is protected within the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. Leopards are often spotted in the rocky hills and dense woodlands. The clear waters of Mzima Springs allow for unique underwater viewing of hippos. Other animals include elephants, lions, buffalo, and giraffes.
