Explore the stunning Selous Game Reserve, the largest protected wilderness in Africa, on a two-day safari from Zanzibar. It is twice the size of the Serengeti and three times larger than Kruger National Park. Selous gives you a unique chance to see Tanzania’s wild south, where you can find large herds of buffalo, rivers filled with hippos, and some of the last remaining wild dogs in Africa. This trip includes easy flights from Zanzibar, exciting game drives, and optional boat safaris in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, providing excellent wildlife viewing without the crowds found in northern parks.
Every Mikumi Holiday Safaris trip is tailored to your personal preferences and interests. Below you’ll find a sample itinerary to inspire your own custom-designed journey.
Your adventure starts with a morning flight or ferry from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam (details will be shared when you book). Meet your guide for a scenic 4-5 hour drive to Selous. You will pass through rural villages and sisal plantations. Arrive at your riverside lodge in time for lunch. Then, set off on your first game drive in the wilderness. This afternoon, you will explore unique ecosystems in Selous, from grassy plains with baobabs to the Rufiji River, where you can see crocodiles and elephants drinking. Watch for rare wild dogs, lion prides, and over 400 species of birds as the sun sets. Return to camp for dinner under the stars, listening to the sounds of the African night.
Wake up early for a final morning game drive, when predators are most active. Look for wildlife near the riverbanks, where giraffes drink and hippos swim in oxbow lakes. After a bush breakfast, start your return journey to Dar es Salaam with a picnic lunch on the way. Catch your afternoon flight or ferry back to Zanzibar and arrive by evening with unforgettable memories of Tanzania’s wild south.

The safari was an experience in my life that I wouldn't want to have missed
Our first safari was very nice. We were very lucky with the animals, as you can see from the pictures. Our guide Shine told us a lot about the animals and we felt very comfortable and safe around her. The service was excellent.
